5 million girls in South Asia
aren't in school.

It's not by choice. Parents value education and know the difference it will make in their children’s lives, and children want to go to school. But sadly, the sheer costs of school fees, textbooks and uniforms are too often out of reach for families living on less than $2 per day. For those who manage to scrape together the funds needed, the education they can afford is often poor quality—sometimes the teacher doesn’t even show up to class.

We know educating girls is one of the keys to ending poverty.

In so many families around the world, education—particularly for women and girls—is the solution to the poverty cycle. In celebration of International Women's Day, we asked some of our staff, partners, supporters and loan recipients what education means to them. You'll find their inspiring stories below.
