Indonesia
Opportunity’s Indonesia program is currently empowering over 26,000 families, like Jeniana’s (pictured), to create brighter futures – one in which they can afford to feed their families, send their children to school and afford medication and care when they fall ill.
Opportunity’s strategic partner in Indonesia, Tanaoba Lais Manekat (TLM), operates in some of the poorest communities across eastern Indonesia. TLM’s undisputed social focus is demonstrated through its dedication to providing affordable and accessible financial and complementary services to people living in poverty.
TLM is implementing an innovative mobile banking initiative in which specially fitted vans act as ‘mobile banks’ - providing access to savings and loans for people who are out of reach of TLM’s standard branches. TLM’s Village Partnership program is enabling clients to receive a steady and increased income. Specially trained staff are placed within communities where entire villages are engaged in similar livelihoods to assess the potential for sustainable community enterprises – offering opportunities to diversify income streams and establish market linkages.
Supporting microenterprise development is powerful in alleviating poverty, but if, for example, clients are spending too much of their time walking long distances to collect water, or regularly cannot work because of illness caused by malnutrition or poor sanitary practices, their businesses may struggle to flourish. To complement its microfinance services on the island of Sabu, TLM has developed a water and sanitation project in which community wells are rehabilitated to provide access to safe drinking water all year round.
