Small islands – big changes
One hundred and seventy-five kilometres from Kupang, capital of the Indonesian island of West Timor, lies the remote island of Sabu. The island’s dry climate means that seasonal hunger is widespread. Yet there is great potential for economic growth through the development of small enterprises.
The silent crisis
Between 2007 and 2008, global food prices increased by an average of 43%. When food prices go up, people living in poverty are forced to use more of their daily income on food, leaving less for other necessities such as school fees, healthcare or proper shelter.
